In 1900 the line was extended
under Mdina through a 770 yds tunnel. During the excavation of
the tunnel bands of clay in the limestone severely slowed progress.
Furthermore to overcome the shrinkage of the clay parts of the
tunnel had to be lined with masonry. Ventilation of the tunnel
was provided by 8 square ventilation shafts. Museum station is
sited approximately 100 yds. from the tunnel exit. The tunnel provides a perfect environment for
the cultivation of mushrooms. |
